The Life and Times of Frank Balistrieri: The Last, Most Powerful Godfather of Milwaukee
"Who was Frank Peter Balistrieri, the last and most power Godfather of the Milwaukee Mafia? Based on hundreds of FBI documents obtained by a Freedom of Information request (as well as substantiating research), Wayne Clingman and Zack Long lay out a timeline of Frank 'The Mad Bomber' Balistrieri's rise through the ranks of the Italian-American criminal underground and through his time controlling Milwaukee. From car bombs to the fabled Las Vegas casino skim, Balistrieri's little known story is sure to prove a captivating one."
This was an interesting project. Wayne Clingman came to me with several hundred FBI files about Frank Balistrieri. Throughout the text, there were many redactions and lines that were entirely blanked out. In order to capture the full story of what was happening in Frank Balistrieri's life, it became necessary to literally read between the lines and piece together various bits of information from disparate files so as follow the trail of Balistrieri's criminality.
From a low-level gangster, to the husband of the don's daughter, this telling of Balistrieri's story reflects the violent nature of the American mafia to show how powerful, ruthless men like Balistrieri rose through the ranks through their manipulation of that violence.
This book was a little out of of my area of expertise but proved an intriguing topic and a wonderful experience from a researcher's point of view.
